DOORSTEPS CORNER

OUR MISSION

To provide accessible resources to the communities we serve through innovative programming and effective partnerships.

Doorsteps Neighbourhood Services (D.N.S.) is operating two programs at Tumpane for the 2016 – 2017 school year.

The Breakfast Program was introduced in January of this year. Breakfast starts at 7:30 AM and ends at 8:45 AM. The student intake started off slowly but we have reached our full capacity since the new school year started. Parents can feel at ease knowing that their children are receiving a well balanced meal to start the day. All meals are prepared fresh every day on site. Supervision is provided until the bell rings at 8:45AM.

The After School Program (A.S.P.) has been at Tumpane for a number of years. We extend a warm welcome to our old students and also our newcomers. Doorsteps is happy to offer these services at a minimal cost to the school community, and we must thank the school administration for partnering with our organization.

Our programs follow the Ontario After School guidelines, and our meals and healthy snacks follow the Ontario Food guidelines. Students enjoy a variety of activities and are supervised by our trained staff. Our afternoon routine includes a healthy snack, homework help and daily physical activities to name a few.

Activity Highlights

Program rules established and students participated in making this agreement.

Birthday chart – we celebrate each other.

Students made “thankful jars”. Each student wrote four things they were thankful for.

Teamwork and communication skills – students worked in groups to carve pumpkins.

Remembrance day wreath – each student made a poppy flower and discussed the importance of living in a free country.

We welcome feedback from all our parents and partners to better serve the needs of our community. Our office can be reached at 416 – 243-5480 and on the web at www.doorsteps.ca.

EARLY FRENCH IMMERSION

2017-2018

Parents/Guardians of Children in Junior Kindergarten

You have a choice to make about French programming for your child. Across the TDSB we offer two programs:

Early French Immersion (SK) and Junior Extended French (Gr.4)

Senior Kindergarten is the ONLY time your child can begin the Early Immersion program.

What is Early Immersion?

Early Immersion programs are designed for students who do not speak French at home. The Early French Immersion program provides the maximum French language experience available in our schools.

Early Immersion begins in Senior Kindergarten. All class activities are conducted in French until the end of grade 3 although some specialist subjects like Phys. Ed. may be taught in English.

English is introduced in Grade 4 for about one hour per day and increases to half of the daily class time by Grade 6.

After Grade 8, students continue the French Immersion program at designated secondary schools. Students who successfully complete a minimum of 10 credits in French at the secondary school level are eligible for a Certificate of Bilingual Studies in French.

To find the French Immersion school for your area, please visit the following website and enter the name of your English school in the designated search window:

www.tdsb.on.ca/ElementarySchool/SchoolChoices/FrenchPrograms

*Catchments are based on the student’s home address and may change in accordance with TDSB procedures

Public information meetings will be held at the following schools.

Final Sports Update for 2016

final

Track and Field – We had a number of students move on to the City Finals this year with our Grade 4 Girls Team winning the overall TDSB West Division Title.

Also Kenny La in Grade 5 finished first overall in the Grade 4 Boys Shot Put and set a new TDSB record of 8.32m.

That now gives Tumpane P.S the most Track and Field Records of any elementary school in the city with a total of 5!!!!!

Coaches: Bair, Haye, DaSilva and Harvey

Soccer – Both the boys and girls soccer teams did very well this year in their regional tournaments (boys team finished in first place and the girls finished in second). However neither teams made it past the TDSB West Division Finals Tournament this year. We played very close games and showed great skill and sportsmanship throughout.

Well Done teams,

Coaches: Harvey and Dasilva

Ultimate Frisbee – Our Ultimate Frisbee team were West Division Finalists and won a banner that now hangs proudly in our gym. The team also showed great sportsmanship and were awared the Spirit Banner for this year too!!!

Great job to all the players!

Coaches: Cardarelli and Brandsma

Co-Ed Baseball – The Co-ed Baseball team only had 4 days of practice and they were able to perform very well at the Family of Schools tournament held at Gosford Public School on June 17th. They finished with 2 wins and 2 losses which had them placed 4th!   The team played really well considering the limited amount of practice time we had.

Great Job Team!

Coaches: Campagna and Harvey
